I wrote this song the day I bought Mo'i, my little red ukulele. The lyrics went up on a collaborative writing pad and I invited friends to come and edit them. This song is quite different from the way I originally put it together. I must specifically thank Jonny Casto-Adern for the entirety of the 2nd half of verse 2, and Will Dixon, Paul Turner, Alex Day and Joe Dexter for listening to and critiquing the song in its early stages.
And of course, I wrote it for you.
{C F Em F} x2
I wrote you a song (C)
I've penned a few words (F)
The sentiment's basic (Em)
If a little absurd (F)
I know you're like me
Always wanted a song
So here it is
Sorry it took me so long
This song is for you (C)
To sing or to play (C7)
I hope that it brightens (Dm)
Your dreariest day (Fadd9)
Because I'm your friend (C)
Or I just want to say 'hi' (C7)
Or you seem a bit off (Dm)
Delete what doesn't apply (add7)
I'm sorry you're ill
I'm glad that you're well
You've lost or gained weight
But I really can't tell
I wish we could talk more
But what would we say
Elton sang it first
But not to you, I'm afraid
This song is for you
To sing or to play
I hope that it brightens
Your dreariest day
Because I'm your friend
Or I just want to say 'hi'
Or you seem a bit off
Delete what doesn't apply
So you say your heart is broken, (D)
tell me it's not true (F C6)
Well I've got a defibrillator, (D)
or a pot of superglue (F G)
You're one in a million
But you haven't a clue
I hope you know who you are
'Cos the lyrics ring true
I wrote you this song
Won't you sing it with me?
It's not very hard
Try it and see
This song is for you
To sing or to play
I hope that it brightens
Your dreariest day
Because I'm your friend
Or I just want to say 'hi'
Or you seem a bit off
Delete what doesn't apply
This song is for you
I hope that you learn it
However you want
'Cos in my eyes you've earned it
Because I'm your friend
And I just want to say 'hi'
And if you're feeling down
I don't need to know why.
I don't need to know why

Paul writes songs the way I wish I could. He blends superb musical skill with sublime lyrics and more than a little nerdiness thrown in for good measure. Charlotte Repton
Will is another amazing artist who is woefuly under-recognised. His songs would not be out of place on the radio; they are effortlessly listenable. Give him a try - you'll be glad you did. Charlotte Repton
